Beyond the Casebook

For 1L students and faculty members, the Beyond the Casebook lunch series provokes discussion about themes that cut across courses and spotlights issues that may get squeezed out of the curriculum.

:03
I kind of came into law school not knowing what to expect.
0:06
Totally green, totally fresh.
0:07
So having programs like Beyond the Casebook is really incredible for giving you that chance
0:12
to talk with professors about issues that they care about, and then that in turn can
0:17
make you really care about.
0:28
The Beyond the Casebook series is an effort to really institutionalize a setting where
0:33
faculty and students can get together, engage in important issues, but do so outside the
0:41
classroom.
0:42
These lunches are a way to connect the classes together and draw out themes that may cut
0:47
across them.
0:48
And also just to spotlight issues that may not get any coverage in the curriculum.
1:01
As much as I hate to admit it, sometimes we tend to cluster along our own ideological
1:05
lines and we don't really go outside of them.
1:07
At this lunch, we were forced to confront ideas that we weren't really comfortable with.
1:10
I just attended the Constitution and the War on Drugs session with Professor Pozen.
1:13
I signed up for Professor David Schizer's Beyond The Casebook lunch about the implications
1:18
of national security on the climate crisis.
1:21
I saw one in constitutional law, which is an area that's interesting to me.
1:25
I immediately knew that's the one I'm signing up for.
1:28
Despite the disagreements we're going to have, we want students to be able to talk to each other.
1:33
So we're trying to model a kind of civic interaction by creating this forum.
1:38
So it doesn't really matter what topic people choose.
1:41
The ability to come together just for a lunch period and talk about a current issue has
1:47
really been rewarding for everybody involved.
1:50
We all felt comfortable asking sort of out-of-the-box questions.
1:55
There were slight tweaks in perspective that I think really got me to think at the very least.
2:01
A number of the students who I didn't know before these lunches followed up with me or
2:05
I followed up with them to keep the conversation going.
2:08
I signed up for a second one, so let's see if I get off the wait list.

A project of the Constitutional Democracy Initiative, the Beyond the Casebook lunch series provides 1L students with an opportunity to discuss current legal issues with faculty in an informal setting and explore areas of law that go beyond the foundational curriculum. Watch students and faculty talk about the program.

Beyond the confines of the classroom, faculty join small groups of students in dialogue about legal, moral, and societal concerns.
